SOCIAL SERVICES

LOCAL DEPARTMENTS OF SOCIAL SERVICES

In Maryland, social services include adoption, foster care, protective services to children and families, and services to families with children. Throughout Maryland, the
Social Services Administration of the Department of Human Resources administers social services in each county and Baltimore City through local departments of social services. These local departments also receive applications for Food Stamp Benefits, Medicaid, and Public Assistance.

Departments provide adult services as well, incorporating assisted living; protective services; senior transportation; and temporary disability programs. Social services departments work with local organizations to provide emergency shelter and transitional housing; drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs; and even GED courses.
