The Joint Committee on Unemployment Insurance Oversight originated as the Committee on Unemployment Insurance Oversight in July 2005 (Chapter 169, Acts of 2005). The Committee was to examine the condition of the unemployment insurance system in Maryland following implementation of Chapter 169, Acts of 2005.
In December 2005, the Committee issued an interim report ( Interim Report, December 19, 2005), and in January 2007, a final report. Authorization for the Committee expired December 31, 2006.
Effective June 1, 2007, the Committee was reestablished as the Joint Committee on Unemployment Insurance Oversight, a legislative committee (Chapters 50 & 51, Acts of 2007). Besides continuing to monitor the impact of the implementation of Chapter 169, Acts of 2005, on the State's unemployment system, the Committee may consider whether changes are necessary to the system in order to maintain its fairness, and the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund's ability to pay out benefits.
Authorization for the Committee extends through December 31, 2010.
