John Patrick McDonough was born July 7, 1950, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and moved to Prince George's County in 1952. He graduated from Bladensburg High School, Bladensburg, Maryland (Class of 1968), The Johns Hopkins University, B.A. (Class of 1972), and University of Maryland School of Law, J.D. (Class of 1977). He has been a member of the Maryland Bar since 1977. Secretary of State McDonough began his career as a Legislative Aide to the Prince George's County Council from 1970-1974. Next, he served as Chief of Staff in the Office of the County Executive, Prince George's County, 1974-1978. From 1979-1982, he was an Associate with the Shipley Firm; and from 1982-1985, a Partner at Cross, Rozner, Edwards, and McDonough. Then, from 1985-2005, he was a Partner with O'Malley, Miles, Nylen & Gilmore and Managing Partner from 1992-2000. In 2006, he opened his own law practice (John P. McDonough, LLC), specializing in land use, zoning, and government. John P. McDonough practiced law for 30 years before being appointed Secretary of State by Governor Martin O'Malley on July 16, 2008.
His political activities include serving as Counsel to the Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee, from 2000 to the present; and as its Vice-Chair from 1998 to 2000. Secretary of State McDonough also has been a member of the Maryland Stadium Authority from 1986-1994; Vice President of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the Board of Visitors, University of Maryland School of Law; President's Roundtable, Greater Washington Board of Trade, Leadership Maryland and other civic and charitable organizations, such as Catholic Charities, the Red Cross, and the American Heart Association.
John P. McDonough has been married to the former Mary Lou Gober since 1972. They have three daughters, Emily, Caitlin and Aisling. They have resided in Mitchellville, Maryland, since 1979.
