Authorized in 2005, the Maryland Commission on Public Art was appointed in 2007 (Chapter 393, Acts of 2005). In March 2008, the Commission had its inaugural meeting. The Commission administers the Maryland Public Art Fund, which was established to commission works of art for installation at public facilities statewide. To ensure that new public facilities constructed by State agencies include the installation of artwork, the Commission is charged also to work with the Department of General Services, the Department of Transportation, and the University System of Maryland. Any artwork obtained through the Fund is to be the responsibility of the Maryland Historical Trust.
Authorization for the Council extends to May 31, 2010 (Code Economic Development Article, secs. 4-601 through 4-608).
