The Chesapeake Nanotechnology Initiative was created on May 31, 2005 by a memorandum of understanding signed by the Governor of Maryland, the Governor of Virginia, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia. The Initiative aims to accelerate the development of innovative nanotechnology products through regional collaboration. Because the area already has government research institutions and private industries working in micro-and nanotechnology, the Initiative will ensure that resources are used cooperatively to build on that leadership in nanotechnology commercialization, development, and growth. Nanotechnology develops tiny devices at scales of less than 100 nanometers for use in medicine, information sciences, physics, and other research fields.
